Livability.com named Columbus, Georgia as one of the 10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S. in its “2018 – 10 Best Places to Retire” rankings. According to Livability.com, each of these 10 cities offers access to affordable and quality healthcare, an accessible cost of living, retiree-friendly businesses and services, as well as amenities to keep residents active and engaged. “We are so pleased with this recognition,” said Mayor Teresa Tomlinson. “We work hard with all of our community partners to offer an exemplary quality of life for our citizens, including retirees. We have a lot to be proud of in Columbus, Georgia.”

“This recognition confirms the findings of our Columbus 2025 Regional Strategic plan. We have a low cost of living, a vibrant arts culture, a 40% reduction in crime over the last ten years, access to affordable high-quality healthcare, and a walkable/bikeable community,” said Brian Anderson, President and CEO of the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce. “Being in the top 10 validates the great work occurring in our region and will enable us to continue to be a wonderful place to live, work, and retire.”

Livability’s data scientists and editors examined more than 2,000 cities to determine the 10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S., and Columbus came in at #9.

They started by analyzing all U.S. cities with a population between 20,000-300,000 and removed the places with high healthcare costs. Using a wide variety of data sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, Medicare, ESRI, USDA and NOAA, eligible cities were ranked on more than 20 data points, including the following:

Safety (Total Crime Index)
Hospital Quality Rating
Affordability
Number of Residents Over 65
Activities and Recreation (including farmers’ markets, golf courses and parks)
Primary Care Physician Rate
Air Quality 
Natural Disaster Risk
Climate
Property Tax Rate
Nursing Home Accessibility and Quality

This is the 6th year in a row Livability.com has released its rankings for the best places to retire. The cities included in this year’s ranking are:
